The Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce is going through a lot of changes throught this year. We have moved to our new office - located on the third floor of 115 West Huron - and we are in the process of changing the way we work with our members.

For the past year, the staff and Board have analyzed the needs of our current members and the reasons certain businesses do not belong to the Chamber. We also studied how similar Chambers across the country approached their relationships with their members. The result of this research is a new Membership Structure that clearly aligns the value of Chamber membership with each member's annual investment. The new structure focuses on increasing member's revenue, promoting employee retention, advocating for business in government and reducing our member's day-to-day business expenses.

New members are signing up under the new structure right now. Members of the Ann Arbor Chamber renewing their membership as of October 1st, will be transferred to the new structure at that time.

We will highlight the new Membership Structure in the September issue of the B2B. If you would like more details on what the new Membership Structure looks like before the September issue of the B2B, please log onto

We have moved to our new office! We are now located at 115 West Huron Street in Ann Arbor, just west of Main Street on Huron. Our offices are located on the 3rd floor.

Our new location has a fresh look and feel and we hope all of our members will visit us over the coming weeks and months to see what our new space can do for you.

We now have the space to accommodate members who need a quiet place to work, away from the office. Members can also use our conference rooms to give a presentation to or have a meeting with a client.

We encourage all of our members to visit us in our new location. We hope to see you soon!

Ever wondered how other companies seem to get and retain some of the best talent? Want to be one of them? Here are a few tips to make your recruiting efforts more powerful.

1. Base your recruiting strategy on the principle that all recruiting activity should have a demonstrable dollar impact on your business. Recruiting should be a revenue-generating activity.
2. Get everyone on-board when it comes to recruiting. Let your staff know what you are looking for in regards to talent and rather than relying on advertising alone, ask your employees to recruit for you. Consider it "trolling for talent".
3. Consider yourself in a war - a war for talent. You must be aggressive and have an attractive package that is better than your competition. Know how many of your employees are being taken away from your competitors vs. who is leaving your company to go work for your competitor.
4. Recruit before you have an open position. Continually be on the outlook for talent, don't wait until you find out you are in need of a new person. Keep these people in mind for potential openings and keep in contact with them on a regular basis. These candidates can be people you would like to work for you, but are not currently looking for a position.
5. Recruit top management positions from within. They already know your culture, your product/service and will have more of a reason to continue employment with you.

We are here to help our members find top talent in our area and beyond. If you have an open position or if you know you will be expanding soon, we would be happy to post your positions on our website for free.

Check out the current postings. If you are interested in posting a position on our site, please contact Megan Turnbow, Marketing Director, at 734.214.0108.

IMPACT 2007
impact

IMPACT will provide strategic updates on hot issues facing our community and then ask event attendees to discuss, debate, brainstorm and evaluate possible solutions to those issues. With all that brain power in one place, a conversation will start and continue beyond the event and ultimately lead to improved economic health and vitality for our region and state.

  • What is the "hot" topic in our region right now?
  • How is the region going to survive and even thrive in a changing economy?
  • What steps do we need to take as a state, region, city, and what steps do we need to take as individual businesses and community leaders to remedy our shared challenges?
  • How can we build on our strengths and shape our region's future?

This year, attendees can choose from three breakout sessions. The sessions will consist of:

"Ann Arbor: Staying Michigan's Hot Spot" assess perceptions and the region's "brand" as well as the issues that affect quality of life and improvements that can be made;

"Encouraging Business Success in our Region- Start-ups, Attracting, and Retaining. What is the Best Use of Our Resources?" cover how the community can better support entrepreneurs, ideas for attracting new companies and retaining and supporting the companies already located here; and

"We're Under Attack! How to Win the Talent War" a discussion on attracting and retaining talent, career paths available to professionals and cultivating leaders.

During lunch, "Citizens on a Mission-What's YOUR Role in Shaping our Region's Future?" an opportunity for participants to discuss the role of the business community in shaping Ann Arbor's future, how to collaborate to bring about change and how to collectively invest in each other (there will be report-outs from the chairs of each breakout session and a review of favorite ideas from each table).

getdowntown

Do your employees love working downtown but hate trying to find a place to park? Do you wish there were more downtown spaces for your customers to use?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, don't pass up this opportunity to purchase go!passes for your employees! A go!pass is a low cost bus pass that allows employees working in the DDA district to ride all AATA buses for free, and use all AATA park and ride lots for free. Your business can offer this great benefit for just $5 a year for each full time employee. Compare that cost to $37.50 a month for a bus pass and $125 a month for a parking pass and the numbers really start to add up.

go!passes are good for your employees, good for the environment, and good for your bottom line. To learn more about go!passes, please visit the getDowntown website or contact Nancy Shore, getDowntown Director, at 734.214.0100.

Please note: 2007-2008 go!pass orders must be placed by September 15, 2007 to ensure delivery of go! passes before the 2006-2007 go!passes expire.
